de Juliana Toren experience

On Wednesday October 26, Ferdi will spent a day with Jeroen Buter, director of the Juliana Toren, a family fun park in Apeldoorn (the Netherlands)
Very exciting learning experience. Tjeko was there once before, with Bosco Mukiibi. Possibly the first Ugandan from Jinja to visit that park :)

Photo a Day: Skippyworld

Day 9: Skippyworld
A group of active, excited Navigator students from Utrecht decided to sponosor our SKIPPYWORLD. They donated more than 100 skippyballs, and even sent one of their own, Lynde Mulders, to represent!

Photo a Day - What?

Day 8: What?
"what are you making?" we'd ask some of the students that helped a few afternoons after their Tjeko Academy training. "I have no idea what this is" was often the reply. "It's a mini-golf!"
"I have no idea what that is!"

Day 7 - Tjeko-nized
If Tjeko ever introduced a simple but effective system, it was the 'writy-bandy' system! With this wristy-bandy a child had free access to all activities, a free Tjeko-Snack, water and lemonade. Bought at www.event-supplies.com

Picture a Day - Joy!

Day 5 - Joy!
All I can say: you should have been here to experience the joy!
Our (rented) tent could keep about 750 kids. Lots of Tjeko.

Picture a Day - Guarded

Day 4 - Guarded We ended up with 3 teams of guards at the same time. Police, private armed-guards and our own guys. Guarding us from the guards. Truth is, guy on the right really started enjoying the Fun Fairs more every day!

Picture a Day - Crowds

Day 4 - Crowds
I remember telling our Tjeko Academy students: "We'll start with 500 kids a day...".
Their eyes almost popped out. But as it turned out, even with many more, those guys were ready for them!

Picture a day - the (almost) blind

On the 3rd day of Fun Fairs, a group of about 10 blind and almost blind children came to visit. For me this was the first 'watery eyes' moment.

National Agricultural Show 2011

Phase 1 of the Tjeko Fun Fair project is being concluded with an impressive presence at the National Agricultural Show in Jinja. During this show, promoting new farming tecniques for the Ugandan farmer, there is a LOT of entertainment availible for the general public. On the 16 acres that the show covers, more than 35% is reserved for
ENTERTAINMENT.
Tjeko is new at this show, and allows children to enjoy some Tjeko activities for the price of a mango! For only 15cents children can go write the Tjeko Karts, enjoy a round of mini-golf, or spent some time jumping on the trampolines.
Tjeko wants to test its concept in this first phase, and our participation at the show shows us what kids really are willing to pay for. Every day our tickets sales have DOUBLED. Today we are estimating to sell more than 400 tickets just today, putting our total well over 1000 and we are just half way the week!

Tjeko got Talent

Today, more than 50 Tjeko Academy applicants received a personal SMS of the Tjeko HQ.
"2morrow, Saturday the 4th, be at st. Jude Training Center at 9am..."
We will select our 40 Tjeko Academy students tomorrow... a 'Tjeko got Talent' kind of selection program!
The SMS service is serving us very well - in Africa not everybody can check their email every day... But mobile phones are THE number 1 way of communicating among Ugandans... The program we are using serves us well to get out short - timely messages!
Within few minuts all our contacts are informed. A great service, offered to us by AB SOLUTIONS . Thanks Ben!

Tjeko Academy - Day One

Today was our pre-recruitment meeting. It went very well! About 45 young people came and about 10 were excused because they had to sit their final exams. We were really excited of the outcome. This was the result of word to mouth from our Ugandan leadership team.

During the meeting we went over the Tjeko values. We want people who embrace our values. Our biggest challenge and responsability is to make sure we have the right people in our Tjeko bus.

One of our favorite quote is from Jim Collins' book "Good to Great". Here is what it said 'people are not your asset but RIGHT people are!' We are going after the right people for Tjeko. The right people in the right seat. And the wroong people off the bus. Pray and agree with us about that.

From our budget we can afford 30 of them and have a margin of 5 so a total of 35. Again we only want to have the creme of the crop... la creme de la creme for Tjeko.

We gave them the color test as homework to do. Explaining to them how to fill it in brought back so many memories of NY. It was always a challenge togo over it with our interns and here it was just the same lol.

It's going to be very interessing to see the result of the color test. For us it will help us to understand who they are and how they can best fit within Tjeko, the work and the culture. It's really exciting to see how God is guiding everything... Thursday and Friday Ferdi, Ben and Deus got to visit all the selected schools in Jinja and invited them for Tjeko Fun fair.

Thanks for your support and prayers. We truly appreciate it. We are aware that we couldn't do Tjeko without you. On behalve of all of us, the children, the volunteer, the v/d Bergh family... Thank you!

Potential Tjeko Academy students filling out their applications on the spot!
Great welcoming 'coffee and thee' table of st. Jude. It really was nice! Great- because we'll be here 6 more days!!!

Within 10 days we got 45+ students! How fun!

Maelle is a real help! She keeps telling us: "I am working for the Tjeko Container". We've tried to tell her that the container is not coming yet...but hey, at least she is preparing for it!

MIND THE GAP!

Over the last 2 years we've been 'finding our ways' around the web.

For a while we failed to have an ACTIVE ENGLISH BLOG. Even now we're still searching for the best possible ways! But yet we CAN NOT WAIT ANY LONGER! So, without further questioning - we're going to resume an ENGLISH blog, next to our DUTCH BLOG.

ENJOY
compared to the older Tjeko designs we've developed a lot!
